From 1st April 2006 the pathology laboratory will start issuing an Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate (eGFR) result alongside the plasma creatinine. The e GFR will allow improved interpretation of renal function taking into account age and sex and the plasma creatinine result. Use of the eGFR has been advocated by the National Service Framework for renal services and is now in widespread use internationally. The guidelines below will help non- nephrologists in general, and primary care clinicians in particular, manage much of CKD without the need for a specialist referral.
