Newborn hearing screen

The NHS Newborn Hearing Screening Programme (NHSP) ensures that children with hearing loss are identified as early in life as possible. The screening test is carried out by Health Visitors in the first 25 days after birth. Coverage is over 99%.

If hearing loss is diagnosed:

  • as the child’s GP you will be informed
  • diagnosis is made by the Audiology staff at RSCH
  • a multi-agency team offer support and help, and first contact with the family is usually within 24 hours of diagnosis
  • a newly diagnosed baby is offered an appointment with a specialist community paediatrician

If risk factors are identified:

  • risk factors are: congenital infections, cranio-facial abnormalities, family history (parents and siblings only), Intermittent Positive Pressure Ventilation for more than five days, jaundice at exchange transfusion level and syndromes related to hearing loss.
  • babies with risk factors are seen at ten months corrected age in community audiology clinics. Risk factors are identified at the time of the initial screen and families are offered an appointment at the appropriate time.

Progressive losses can occur so if you or the family have any concerns about this or any matters relating to a child’s hearing please contact the community audiology department on (01273) 267312.
