Cataract referral pathway

Since early 2004 optometrists and Ophthalmic Medical Practitioners in Brighton and Hove have been able to refer their patients directly for surgery. In addition accredited practitioners have been paid for performing a follow up check at the same time as the GOS (ST) refraction check at four weeks post-op.

The details are all in the protocol for the cataract pathway (653kb Word file).

The pathway in brief:

In September 2008 direct referral for post-operative capsular thickening YAG laser treatment was added to the pathway. For patients who require referral for YAG please use the forms from above and make sure the patient is given the consent advice sheet.

How do I become accredited?

Accreditation for the cataract pathway is via the WOPEC CD-Rom. Each individual requires a code to access this training. Codes are available from the East Sussex LOC administrator jackie.oxley@googlemail.com

You do not need to be accredited to refer either for cataracts or YAG.
